<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: large; line-height: 115%;"><i style="background-color: white;">Hello everyone. Today I am posting an article on getting
your manuscript ready for Createspace (you can stop pulling your hair out now,
lol). I hope this information will help make it a little easier for you in
transitioning from e-book to paperback.<o:p></o:p></i></span></div>

a book for print with Createspace using Microsoft Word <o:p></o:p></i></span></b></div>

<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: large; line-height: 115%;"><i style="background-color: white;">First, I format my work using Microsoft Word 2007/Word
2010, but there are similar programs out there. There are several sizes but we
are talking today about formatting a 6x9 paperback, one of the most popular
sizes. I hope I can shed some light on this process because it doesn’t have to
be as frustrating and confusing as it seems. <o:p></o:p></i></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: large; line-height: 115%;"><i style="background-color: white;">The first thing we will discuss is setting margins:<o:p></o:p></i></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: large; line-height: 115%;"><i style="background-color: white;">If you do not set your margins correctly your book will print
too far into the gutter or too near an edge, (the gutter is where the books is
bound together by glue). So let’s set
your margins; go to the Page Layout tab in word, and select the Margins
drop-down. Next chose ‘Custom Margins’. A

font. Times New Roman is the number one choice in the publishing industry, but
things are changing. I use Garamond because it is an easy to read font but
don’t stop there. Try something nice for things like titles and chapter
headings. There are a lot of pretty fonts out there but try not to use anything
that will distract your readers from your story. Also a note; use a ‘serif’
font instead of sans-serif font, they are more appealing to the eye.<o:p></o:p></i></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: large; line-height: 115%;"><i style="background-color: white;">Now comes paragraph set up. Under the home heading look for
the paragraph tab and find the arrow to the right bottom and click there and
set up the paragraph indents and spacing. A note here; <b>never, ever, never, </b>use the tab key to indent. It confuses the
program Createspace uses and it gets real ugly (pulling out your hair ugly). Paragraphs
are justified so that all of the words line up on both the left and right
margins. <o:p></o:p></i></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: large; line-height: 115%;"><i style="background-color: white;">Next under the Indentation heading, set to “First line” and

for yourself.<o:p></o:p></i></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: large; line-height: 115%;"><i style="background-color: white;">Next set ‘Before’ spacing to 6 points between paragraphs.

The trailer for <a href="http://vmmckevitt.blogspot.com/" title="http://vmmckevitt.blogspot.com/">Virginia McKevitt</a>'s <i>Fracture: The Secret Enemy Saga</i> evokes the adventure and pace of the big movie thrillers. I love the way this trailer uses ancient images and font to set the mood for this book. The more traditional aspects of the design showcase the paranormal elements. I liked it!virginia mckevitthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14533739643180905060noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3141486233807919448.post-1636024497754603472013-04-10T08:29:00.000-07:002013-04-10T08:58:33.426-07:00The Liebster Award is for Bloggers<br />

<br />
<li><a href="https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/148271">FRACTURE The Secret Enemy Saga</a> on March 02, 2013 <br /><img alt="star" height="16" src="https://www.smashwords.com/static/img/star.png" width="16" /> <img alt="star" height="16" src="https://www.smashwords.com/static/img/star.png" width="16" /> <img alt="star" height="16" src="https://www.smashwords.com/static/img/star.png" width="16" /> <br /> *I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review* I’ll admit when I started reading the very first chapter I wasn’t sure how much I would like this book. It was my first fantasy novel, but I wanted to expand my reading base so I continued to read on and I am very pleased that I did. It started off a little slow but I believe it was building up to the action half way through the book. There was so much detail packed into the pages. The author cleverly combines the fantasy world of Patwain with earth. There is a fracture between the two, leaving both worlds vulnerable and accessible. I really liked the idea of The Couton- beautiful alluring women with the ability to steal memories. This was original and unlike anything I had ever read before. Tegrin, the lion-esque man is sent from Patwain to stop these women. It is then that he meets Kristina and they soon realise that their worlds are entwined beyond what they could have ever imagined. I enjoyed learning about the true identity of Kristina’s heritage and her quest for revenge after the death of her parents. It took me a little longer to connect with Tegrin but once I opened myself up to accept the fantasy element, I enjoyed his story and his own quest. This was a really good book, like no other I have read. I enjoyed the author’s writing style and the rich descriptions she created. After knowing how it ends I can’t wait to read the second book!<br />
<li><a href="https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/257014">The Hunted Fracture The Secret Enemy Saga Book Two</a> on March 02, 2013 <br /><img alt="star" height="16" src="https://www.smashwords.com/static/img/star.png" width="16" /> <img alt="star" height="16" src="https://www.smashwords.com/static/img/star.png" width="16" /> <img alt="star" height="16" src="https://www.smashwords.com/static/img/star.png" width="16" /> <img alt="star" height="16" src="https://www.smashwords.com/static/img/star.png" width="16" /> <br /> *I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review* This is the second instalment in the Secret Enemy Saga. The Couton- a dangerous race of women who drain people of their memories are back and invading the city of New Orleans. It is up to Tegrin and Kristina to put a stop to them and their killing spree. Tegrin and Kristina are joined on their mission by their friends, Sissy and Jimmy. I liked these two supporting characters in this book and how they added another dimension to the story. I felt the action was kicked up a notch in this instalment and the content was a little grittier than the first book. This was to be expected as the number of murders increased as did their descriptions. This was not a bad thing as I enjoyed the authors writing. Being the romance fangirl that I am, I did enjoy the progression of the relationship between Tegrin and Kristina. No matter the circumstance or danger they faced, I was a sucker for the romance weaved through this book of action and suspense. I enjoyed this story perhaps more than I expected to. I fully immersed myself in the journey and was rooting for Tegrin and Kristina to triumph. I am hooked on these characters and must read any future quests they will have.</li>

book down. The first night I got the book, I stayed up late reading it. Her
characters are well developed as well as her plot and the motivation that
drives her characters. Virginia's active imagination draws us in as if we were

<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Review of Fracture: 4/12/12<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">With this book set in a parallel universe I found myself
being drawen into this new mystical world created by Virginia and also by the
characters as well. To be honest I found myself stunned by the amount of
description within this book that brings forth the story as if it were a movie
before my eyes.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">With the story taken place in the Kingdom of Potwain and
the motive that drives her characters, Virgina has created a world all her own
filled with action, adventure, and a little bit of romance.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">More then once I found myself on the edge of my seat
waiting to find out what would happen next. The attraction of this book draws
you in word by word and will make you not to want to put it down before you
finish turning to the last page. I fell in love not only with her story, but
her characters and you can't put a price on that.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Another great, one of a kind book that will leave you

review is from: Fracture: The Secret Enemy Saga (Paperback) <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">This story begins in another world where Tegrin is awaiting
his concubine, Natiana, she is his only one while other members of his Lion
Clan had several. At first he thinks that she is playing a game with him but he
soon is informed by his king, King Yorandt that she has found the portal or
fracture to our world and she has gone thru. This portal has been a secrete to
all except King Yorandt and the Lion Clan who are fierce warriors and are the
Guardians of this world. They keep the peace and enforce the laws of Patwain.
Tegrin is told by his king that the Couton woman Natiana has escaped from her
world into ours because here she and the other Couton women would be free to
steal our memoirs and kill us in the process. The Couton </span><span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">women are a troublesome breeds who only use the males in
their world to procreate. They take herbs to ensure that the offspring will be
born female. They steal memories like a drug and if they take too much they
kill the person whose mind they have tapped into. They are kept in check by the
Guardians in Patwain </span><span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">here on earth they can take their fill. Tegrin makes the
journey thru the Fracture which on earth's side is a cave. He makes it at night
in hopes of not running into any humans. You see Tegrin has yellow eyes wild
shaggy hair and when he opens his mouth you see canines not unlike those of the
big cats of Africa. Using his hunting skills and other worldly senses he tracks
the Couton women to there first kill. It is the mother and stepfather of
Kristina. Tegrin is surprised by her presence and is forced to make her
unconscious and take her with him into the caves. In the town of Blessing is
where the fracture opens on to. It is a town of about 3000. The towns' people
have been having collective dreams of angels along with other strange
occurrences. And these are the precise dreams that the father of Kristina had
been having before he was killed.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Fracture was an extremely entertaining book. I loved the
slow way the author lets us into<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">the true identity of Kristina's heritage. The world of
Patwain is very well developed. There<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">are back stories to the characters and the women of Couton
could have their own<o:p></o:p></span><br />

and conflict that envelope Patwain<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">become more evident you get pulled more and more into this
world of Kings and concubines, fierce worriers and the pull and tug for power.
Along he way our heroes are helped and hindered by<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">both external forced the work against them as well as their
refusal to accept their own destinies.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">If you like exploring other worlds that are well developed
this book will definitely entertain.<o:p></o:p></span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Author: Virginia McKevitt<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Format: Kindle, Paperback<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Only after her mother and step-father's brutal murders and
her subsequent encounter with a lion-esque man named Tegrin, does Kristina
realize that her visions of a shadow world are more than just visions; they are
a window across the fracture joining Earth and Patwain. She learns from Tegrin
of the evil that has crossed to Earth - The Couton - a beautifully angelic race
gifted withe ability to steal memories. Unfortunately, human memories are more
potent than anything they had previously encountered. Potent to the point of
addiction as the incredible high peaks when every last memory extracted leaving
behind a lifeless husk. And now that the fracture and human memories are known
to The Couton, it may be too late to stop them.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Virgina McKevitt's, Fracture: The Secret Enemy Saga, is an
interesting twist on the fantasy genre. It is very difficult to take the
majority of a story whose setting is in the "real world" and blend in
fantasy characters and make it truly believable. Take the movie
"Enchanted" for example, I was never committed to the premise because
of this. But there are exceptions like "Starman" that have such great
characterization, that it is easy to believe and become completely absorbed in
the story. Fortunately, MCKevitt does this effortlessly. Her characters are
deep, complex, and compelling and their relationships evolve at just the right
pace. My only complaint would be the time spent in Patwain, it felt a bit
abbreviated and I would have liked to have seen Kristina's education and
evolution of her ability explored a bit more. However, I have hopes that this
will come in future volumes of the story as this is the first in a series.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Overall, my favorite is character is Tegrin. His soul is
tortured in so many ways - his people's history, the betrayal of his lover, the
very nature of his job and responsibilities, and his deep belief that he onlyl
to serve and does not deserve happiness.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">For those who enjoy something a little different in the
fantasy genre, check out "Fracture: The Secret Enemy Saga" and you
too will be anxiously awaiting the release of the second volume.<o:p></o:p></span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Good story but....While I understand this is a fantasy it
should still have a reality. I found it beyond belief that the humans that met
the "Lion Man" immediately accepted him & they instantly trusted
him & became friends. The heroine loses her parents and appears to be
hardly affected by the loss except to want revenge. There's no funeral - just
an immediate journey with Lion Man. While the town of Blessing is supposed to
be a small town there's almost no information on the town or other residents.
The story is interesting & compelling and I will most likely purchase the
next in the series as the writer does leave you wanting to learn more about the
parallel kingdom & the characters. <o:p></o:p></span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">This book makes me believe that my thoughts about aliens
and parallel universes are real happened, that aliens and parallel universes
exist. Like a teenage girl in summers I hardly waited night to fall and stars
show up and then I was placed comfortably and watched the starry sky. Then in
those starry nights my thoughts growing up and my imagination started to bloom
around me. Reading Fracture I was back in my teenage years staring in the
stars, waiting something to happen.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">The cover is perfectly done, because if you read this book
you will understand that man from the cover is exactly how was Tegrin describe
in the book, a lion-man, a woman beside him would be Kristine-a perfect,
emerald, green eyes and red, long hair, I would love to see it more from her
hair. Whole picture from the cover is red so for that reason Kristine's hair
not seen, its seams to me like whole picture is covering with her hair or so
should look like that. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews <o:p></o:p></span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">The Kingdom of Potwain is a parallel universe to our own.
They believe in separation for the good of both universes. A very interesting
new world well thought out and described. How they maintain that separation is
the main premise at the start of this story. In order to keep the two worlds
from interacting they must send someone to our world, a man with many skills to
keep the two worlds apart. How he interacts with the inhabitants of our world
is interesting and compelling.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">I enjoyed the separate world created within the Kingdom of
Potwain and the inhabitants. It was an interesting new world and the only thing
I was disappointed in was that we didn't learn more about this world. Hopefully
in the next of the series we will.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Ms. McKevitt has created a YA novel with interesting and
complex characters who relate to each other well. The storyline is good and
flows well. The dialogue was realistic and moved the story forward well. The
action scenes played out with good descriptions so the reader is able to
imagine what is happening. The book is well written and is appropriate to the
targeted age group and audience.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Overall this is a very good book that addresses many issues
young people have without a "preachy" attitude within the context of
a great action packed and fun story.<o:p></o:p></span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">A smartly accomplished and compelling plot! Talent and
imagination meet technique in the unlikeliest of places.... the
"Fracture" between two worlds.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">The characters are driven by McKevitt's own hand. Built by
her obvious vivid imagination you will come to know them personally. They will
pull you in to the story not chapter by chapter but paragraph by paragraph.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">McKevitt's writing style is freshly surprising and
flourishes with touches of realism that make the "Secret Enemy Saga"
a double edged tale that lingers long after the last word is read.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">McKevitt's thought processes are well formed and
believable. Maybe too believable.<o:p></o:p></span><br />

city. I really love the characters, their personalities, and how they overcome
obstacles on their journey to protect our world. This book is a very quick read

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 16pt; line-height: 115%;">A few days a go I was asked to invite other
“creatives” in my field to Hollywood’s number one meeting place for the film
and theatre industry. What does a site for the film making industry have to do
with writers, you ask? I asked myself that very same question when I joined
back in May of this year. After perusing the site and talking to a few people
who seemed to be in the know, I decided, what did I have to lose. This is what
I have come away with;<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 16pt; line-height: 115%;">Stage 32 is a network designed for the film,
television, and theater, including some of the most creative talent on the
planet. It has over 70,000 members in over 180 countries and growing. It was
created by Richard Botto and Curt Blakeney, industry leaders in their own
right, with the belief that networking is the key to perfecting one’s craft,
something writers are well aware of. It is a community of professionals and
creatives who are committed to each other and to the reality of making their
dreams come true. It is a place where talented people gather to discuss their
projects and find open doors to success.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

industry but has expanded to include the craft of writing, including authors, editors,
and cover artist in fiction and non-fiction alike. Let’s face it, we are all
looking to expand our horizons, to grow and challenge ourselves, to become
better.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 16pt; line-height: 115%;">Is it like Facebook? Loosely, yes. Facebook is a
community where we share everything; our family, our pets, what we ate last
night, and our writing, Stage 32 is not. It is a community built around your professional
profile, your resume, so to speak. When you connect with others on 32 it is
your brand, the writer, cover artist, or reviewer, etc. they see, not how our
cute pets do funny things.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 16pt; line-height: 115%;">Here are some words from CEO, Richard Botto: <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 16pt; line-height: 115%;">“What we hear from our users is that Facebook is
great for family and friends, but not for networking to find jobs, form
partnerships, etc. And LinkedIn is more geared toward corporate types as
opposed to creatives. Additionally, their forums are littered with spam,
whereas we have a zero spam policy.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 16pt; line-height: 115%;">Don’t get me wrong, I love all of the fun stuff
that’s on Facebook, not to mention the exposure for my books but I also like
the idea that there is a site that is a little more business-like, and may give
me the opportunity to expand my brand into a wider arena.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 16pt; line-height: 115%;">Going back to exposure, just the sheer number of
people who will see your work will increase dramatically, worldwide. Who
wouldn’t be thrilled with that? Getting readers is what it’s all about. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">

<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 16pt; line-height: 115%;">That is what Stage 32 is. A place to grow your
contacts and build a network of like minded people, as well as opening doors to
a whole new world of possibilities. Is it for everyone? That is for you to
choose, but what writer doesn’t dream of seeing their work on the big screen? Someone,
somewhere in this community might just read your book one day, and the rest, as
the saying goes, “is history”. You never know who might be looking for the next
big one (I already have my actors picked out, lol).<o:p></o:p></span></div>

movies:<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">

<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 16pt; line-height: 115%;">Not everyone is interested in having their book
transformed into a movie, I understand that, but for those who have the dream,
Stage 32 might be the door. So come on. Check out Stage 32. You just might want
to stay.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

That got your attention didn’t it, but the topic really is about crossing genres; can you, should you and if you do, can you pull it off. This coming from a fantasy, mystery, thriller, romance, action, eh, novelist (try slinging that out there when someone ask you what your book is about).<br />
Someone once told me fantasy has rules. I agree, its magic, you can do anything: pigs can fly, cows can talk, a kiss can wake a princess, but wizards always have to carry a staff. No I’m serious. I was told never to break that rule. It has to do with quantum physics and pole shifts. Serious stuff that could change our world as we know it.<span id="more-26044"></span><br />
All kidding aside, every genre has rules that have been bent over the course of time. Plato or some famous cartoon character (Pluto, I think) divided literature into three classic genres: poetry, drama and prose but somewhere back in the 1900′s all hell broke loose. In 1898 H. G. Wells wrote a science fiction novel, War Of The Worlds, that spawned widespread panic in 1938, when it was aired on Halloween, by actor Orson Welles as a news bulletin. People actually believed the world was being invaded by aliens.<br />
That is power people! Ah, but I digress. Back to the present. Today we are bombarded with creatures and human beings who are brought together in every imaginable way; love, or friendship, or even in a common goal, to save the world, and we do it by mixing genres. Case in point: Romance is supposed to be happily ever after with a strong emphasis on, well romance. With Fantasy, one designs the world’s geography, race and magic, with good verses evil. Westerns should have a hero in conflict. You get my point.<br />
Jump to the present; rules are made to be broken and so they are. Today’s readers expect more. Romance doesn’t always end with the lovers riding off into the sunset. They do eventually; they just go kicking, screaming and fighting first. Sometimes the evil sorcerer wins, and we get a certain amount of satisfaction from that. Oh, and the hot guy in the cowboy hat? He runs off with the beautiful lonely widow’s brother.<br />
For god’s sake people just make it believable! If you don’t your reader is out of here and them babies are hard to get back. How do you do that you ask? Do a little research on your subject matter. Know the basic structure of the genre you are writing in. What makes it work and why readers like it, then stretch it.<br />
I know, I know. You have to write it for you. Well if that’s the case then you shouldn’t be disappointed if only you read it. The little lady down the hall ain’t going to be happy if Jack and Jane don’t make it. That’s what makes her read romance, because in spite of it all, they will be together. If Johnny expects his assassin to be like Jason Bourne, give him a little romance, but don’t have him cutting out hearts or humming the theme from Barney. Wait, that sounds creepy. It might work, she thought.<br />
Ahem… So, write your paranormal romance about Jack the vampire, who lives a tortured existence because his mother was an alien who came here from that planet no one can pronounce, and then one day he falls in love and marries a half human history teacher who figures it all out, and then they ride off into the sunset in her time travel machine to live happily ever after. All in one breath.<br />
See how easy that was.</div>

How can beings from different worlds become romantically involved and even be believable? I hope I can shed some light on that very subject because that is what my novel, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/-/e/B007I0CTSG">FRACTURE The Secret Enemy Saga</a> stands on; two people from different worlds, fighting in the same cause and falling in love. That's a mouthful!<br />
How can I make that believable you ask? Next time you go to the mall look around you. The couples holding hands and shopping are as diverse as you can get; different nationalities, different shapes and sizes, even different beliefs, yet they seem to make their relationships work. How?<br />
The Asian man with the American wife are from worlds so different they might as well be from Mars and Jupiter. What about the Italian woman or the French man? I could go on and on. The cultures and beliefs that separate us everyday are broken and shattered by one simple need, to be loved and accepted by another.<br />
How far off am I that someone from another world could actually fall in love with someone from this world and vice versa? Not far at all. Take those two people, throw them into a conflict that threatens both their worlds and fill it in with a little magic and mayhem, friends and family and who knows. You might have a winner.virginia mckevitthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14533739643180905060noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3141486233807919448.post-492655187950381512012-07-13T16:51:00.001-07:002012-07-13T16:51:06.273-07:00Colleen Hoover Climbs Self-Published Bestseller List - GalleyCat<a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/galleycat/self-published-bestseller-list-for-week-of-july-9-2012_b54173#.UAC0XBOhwIY.blogger">Colleen Hoover Climbs Self-Published Bestseller List - GalleyCat</a>virginia mckevitthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14533739643180905060noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3141486233807919448.post-2520860129262091202012-07-06T08:54:00.002-07:002012-07-06T08:58:31.418-07:00The Art of Lying<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<br />
Fiction writers are the best liers in the world. They have to be or they would never sell a book. You name it, a good author can write a story about it. Does it mean we are experts on our writing subject. Probably not (have you seen any vampires or dragons running around lately), but with imagination, research and good old lying a writer can transform a stack of dead trees into a world of fantasy, fear, science fiction, or romance, and readers everywhere want to believe it.<br />
That is what writing is all about. Taking those pages of lies and transforming them into believable bits of time that takes a reader away from their everyday lives and on a journey. That is what reading is all about. Every genre has a different set of lies. Some lies are based on real life situations, others on the utterly fantastic (there's that dragon again).<br />
Do you have a pack of lies you would like to share with world? Get started before the zombies get you.virginia mckevitthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14533739643180905060noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3141486233807919448.post-62914816354344126952012-07-02T13:13:00.000-07:002012-07-02T13:13:18.655-07:00Paranormal Romance~What makes It Hot? Paranormal Romance is one of the hottest genres (actually a sub-genre of fantasy) on the market today. The titles and book covers alone can make one break out in a sweat, but what is it that makes you want to read about romantic encounters with beings from other worlds or vampires and werewolves? Is it the old concept of forbbiden love or the thrill of the bad boy (or girl) image mixed up with fangs and wolf fur?<br />
Dragons and wizards are sitting on the back burner while muscled bodies and creatures who howl at the moon warm the beds of the humans we write about. Steamy romance, whether implied in Ya or graphic in Paranormal erotica, has encreased by leaps and bounds since the e-book revolution and now knows no boundaries.<br />
Don't get me wrong, sex sells in any format but you have to have a good story to back it up. There still needs to be adventure, a plot, somewhere that this is all going. Without a good story line its just porn on paper.<br />
Fantasy, as wild and imaginative as it is, still has rules. If your reader does not find your characters and story believable you will lose their interest. Make the relationships between your human and non-human characters real. Give them a cause they both have a stake in (no pun intended), especially if its for different reasons. Obstacles that strengthen real life relationships are everywhere. Just give them a little twist.<br />
So, what makes it hot? Dark and dangerous delivers whether you dash it with a little pepper or turn on the hot suace. Romance appeals to the heart and the paranormal infuses it with the thrill of the fantastic, something we all want a little bite of (I just can't help myself).<br />

A great big panel truck from the local library that would come rolling down our streets in the summer carrying adventures, fantasies and places far away. The sides were painted in bright colors and a cheerful voice would announce its arrival over a loud speaker. (I think that lumbering elephant drew more kids than the ice cream truck.)<br /> My sister who was ten years older than me would run to the curb with me and my younger brother and sister in tow. She loved to read and she passed it on. Hot summer nights would find us falling asleep to the likes of Gulliver's Travels or Swiss Family Robinson.<br /> My imagination ran wild at that age and never quit. I love the fantastic. One can go anywhere and do anything and so I did. The move from the world inside my head to the pages of my first novel was only a matter of time. <br /> The first person to read my finished work, <a href="http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13539142.Fracture___The_Secret_Enemy_Saga" title="Fracture The Secret Enemy Saga by Virginia McKevitt">Fracture The Secret Enemy Saga</a><br />was my husband who reads like most people eat. I'll never forget what he said when he turned the last page, "I feel like I've been on a journey that I didn't want to end. Don't stop."<br /> Those words have pushed me onward and there is no turning back. I wrote this as a Q and A post origionally at Goodreads to see what other writers had to say but the reach continues onward. So I ask,why do you write?virginia mckevitthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14533739643180905060noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3141486233807919448.post-5197643447917048982012-05-26T07:19:00.000-07:002012-05-26T07:19:12.585-07:00The Devils in the Details Do you have fight scenes in your book? What does your character used to defend him or herself; a gun, a sword or even his bare hands? How much do you know about how to use a weapon or use your hands as a weapon?<br />
My protag is a muscle bound assassin who is feared in his world but when he has to come to ours he is on unlevel ground. He's suppose to come here, find his prey and leave without being known but he gets found out<em> </em>by a young woman who will be his partner throughout the rest of the story. <br />
The young woman, Kristina is the key to the story. She has abilities she is only just learning about, but she also has fighting skills. Her parents sent her to self defense classes blah, blah, blah. How do I convey that in my writings?<br />
I have some knowledge of martial arts. Not much. I am a brown belt. Like I said, not much, and I didn't want Kristina's fight scenes to look orchestrated, so what did I do? I studied hand to hand combat and martial art videos and read articles from well known people in the martial arts arena. I even watched myself in a mirror with a weapon to see how to make it look real.<br />
My assassin's skills and even the marine in my novel had to <em>feel</em> real and I hope that I have accomplished that with what I have learned, <em>and</em> there is magic in my book also.<br />
Alas! that is another story. Study your characters abilities. Try to make them as real as possible. Research is the key, so don't treat it like poison ivy.<br />
<br />
virginia mckevitthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14533739643180905060noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3141486233807919448.post-89181678464284872202012-05-22T16:37:00.001-07:002012-05-22T16:42:19.774-07:00Bringing Your Words to Life I have a very vivid imagination, so when I read a book I<em> see </em>everything that's happening; the action, the character, even the scenery. How does a writer convey that to his or her readers? I put myself into the story. I touch the rocky wall, feel the sand under my feet and then I put it into words.<br />
<br />
Example: Jenny and Mica were laying on the beach. He kissed on the forehead and smiled. This would be a day she would never forget.<br />
<br />
This is much better: Jenny felt the scratch of wet sand against her back. She opened her eyes. Micah was smiling. His blue eyes as turbulent as the sea they had just come from. He leaned over and kissed her on the forehead. A delicious shiver went down her spine. This would be a day she would never forget.<br />
<br />
Even that can use improvement but I think you get the idea. Where are they? What are they doing? You tell me. <br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0.25in;">
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 11pt;">Tegrin waited until midnight before he slipped
into the caves and through to the other side, wanting to avoid humans at all
cost. Darkness would be the best cover. He did his best hunting at night.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 11pt;"> He thought his knowledge of this place was very
good but he did not expect the beauty that surrounded him. It could almost be
home if he did not know better. His catlike eyes adjusted well to the dim light
of a half moon. Tegrin’s excellent hearing picked up even the tiniest sounds.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 11pt;"> He sniffed the air, taking in every smell
around him. Small rodents and birds nested close by. His eyes narrowed. Another
scent filled his nostrils. The one he was looking for.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 11pt;"> The Couton, and they were heading towards the
lights of a city. Urgency gripped him as he headed for the town below. He
stayed in the brush along the road to conceal himself and tried to work on a
plan of capture.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 11pt;"> Just before dawn he came across a cold,
lifeless dwelling. He sniffed the air and the smell of death filled his
nostrils. Tegrin circled the building, listening and sniffing the air, but
found no life was present. He walked up the steps pushing the door open. Inside
were two bodies, one male and one female, both had been murdered. He knew by
the scent that the Couton had been there.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 11pt;"> The hair on his arms stood up. He was not alone
and knew it. A young woman lunged from the shadows, a knife in her shaking
hand.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 11pt;"> “You killed my parents!”<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 11pt;"> Moonlight reflected off the long blade of a
Bowie knife slicing through the air. Tegrin was too fast for the hand that wielded
it.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 11pt;"> He deflected the knife, pulling her close to
him. She had a whiff of something strange before darkness enveloped her. A deep
voice faded away.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 11pt;"> “I did not kill your parents,” Tegrin
whispered.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 11pt;"> He carried her back to the caves. This was a
complication he did not need. “By the Throne of Patwain, what am I to do with
this human?”<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 11pt;"> He studied the woman for a long time. She
looked to be about nineteen, maybe less. Long fiery red hair fell across her
face. Quite pretty, he thought, in an unusual way.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 11pt;"> Those green eyes, he sighed, they had been
filled with hatred for him before she blacked out. The wait for her to regain
consciousness chewed at him. He knew he would have to tell her the truth.<o:p></o:p></span><br />virginia mckevitthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14533739643180905060noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3141486233807919448.post-33093262201449587182012-04-29T11:48:00.002-07:002012-04-29T11:48:27.750-07:00Women Writers and Their Share of the Market Three of the most popular women writers of all time are; J. K. Rowling (450 million books sold in the Harry Potter series + movie rights), Danielle Steel (800 million books sold (best seller of all time in Romance genre), and Stephanie Meyer (100 million for her Twilight series + movie rights). What makes them special? They are all different in their style of writing, yet they draw a huge audience.<br />
I believe what sets them apart is the connection they all have with the readers who chose their books. People want to escape from the real world for a variety of reasons, so they delve into magical places or romantic lives of imaginary people. When a writer can bring the pages of a book to life, and readers can go beyond the paper its written on, then you have a winner.<br />
These women have not only cornered the market with their great stories, they have overcome a market that was at one time predominately a man's world. The writing world is changing. The ebook market has hit the world by storm, but you still need to have a great story that people will want to read.<br />
Watch the newcomers like Amanda Hocking (420,000 sold and counting) and Alice Sebold (118,583 sold) and see where they are headed. Alice is just behind John Grisham in sales with her book Lovely Bones. The writing world is changing faster than speed of light and women writers are ready for the challenge.virginia mckevitthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14533739643180905060noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3141486233807919448.post-27756635850078794392012-04-22T10:15:00.001-07:002012-04-22T10:15:01.619-07:00FRACTURE The Secret Enemy Saga<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Does your novel or story cross the genre lines? Is it something like this; my book is a contemporary paranormal romantic young adult thriller fantasy. Phew! Say that three times fast.<br />
Todays modern novels do not fit into the simple guidlines of yesterday. There is still the basics, but then you have a vampire who is from another world, who falls in love with a human being who finds out she can use magic<em> and</em> they fight the zombies and the mafia together. <br />
Catagory my dear? Who knows. I'm going to bed. virginia mckevitthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14533739643180905060noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3141486233807919448.post-48292271942909241272012-04-17T08:50:00.001-07:002012-04-17T16:40:05.276-07:00from Shellwy Hitz's Self Publishing Coach blog<h2 style="text-align: center;">

Hi Shelley,<br />
<br />
Thank you for the opportunity to talk about my book marketing strategies.<br />
<br />
First of all, I am new at this game, so reading what other authors have done to market their books and make them successful was critical for me. Sites like yours and other experienced writers have been a tremendous help to someone such as myself. That said, here is what I have learned:<br />
<br />
The internet is a virtual marketing smorgasbord avenue. I have put my book and myself on every social media site I can find; Facebook, twitter, Goodreads, She Writes, and the list continues on and on. I feel the best of these however is Google+ and Facebook. There seem to be a wider audience for me there.<br />
<br />
I haven't stopped there though. I have created a blog and even a book trailer for my marketing campaign, and am now hunting reviewers with a rabid zeal. I connect with other bloggers and new writers whenever I can and try to pass on what I have learned. <br />
<br />
It's hard work because you don't have the backing of a big house on your side, but you do have the satisfaction of knowing you are doing all you can to get your book, and really you out there.<br />
<br />
FRACTURE The Secret Enemy Saga has had three 5 star reviews at Amazon.com and is waiting review currently on several sites. The challenges are huge, but I'm confident that I can meet them, after all I just published my first book.<br />
<br />
Thanks again, Shelley <br />
